Evacuation of School Premises

On Thursday November 14, 2013 during the end of period 1 and the beginning of period 2 the populus of Sullivan Heights Secondary was evacuated. The Sulli Scholar is putting the rumours of the evacuation to rest with the true information here in this article. On Thursday morning in the science area, a teacher entered their room and smelt natural gas in the air. Immediately the teacher informed the office and the school was evacuate for safety measures. The school then informed Terasen and they came to the school to view the danger of the gas. Fortunately there was no danger and the gas wasn't harmful and the experts advised that it was a minor problem and that they'll try to open the windows and see if the smell went away, and it did. School was back called back in session and school continued back to normal. No one was injured or harmed in any way.

We Day 2013

On Friday October 18th at Rogers Arena a pep rally for social change took place, also known as We Day. We Day is a sister company of Free the Children, founded by Mark and Craig Keilburger at the tiny age of 12 years old (Craig) in their basement in Thornhill, Ontario. We Day features widely known speaks (eg. Dalai Lama) and singers that perform to reward  the kids coming to the event for their hard work. This years We Day featured many people (list below). Some of the highlights of the show, (even though the entire show was a highlight) Molly Burke; a Me to We speaker that is blind and supports bullying and the power of hope. Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger; They were definitely a highlight of the show and they performed a duet, Let Me Go, and Avril closed the show with her song, Girlfriend (remember that song?) and Here's To Never Growing Up. Vishaal Vijay (11yrs)  and Hannah Alper (10yrs); together they spoke about Iqbal Masif, a 13yr old who inspired Craig to create Free the Children and Malala Youfaszai a 16yr old who fought against the Taliban to get girls to go school and get and education. Martin Luther King III who spoke of his fathers 50 year legacy, I Have a Dream. A really, really big speaker to come was Kofi Anaan; former Secretary General of the UN and Nobel Bell Peace Prize laureate, who spoke about children making a change and it having great effects because we are the future :) And each and everyone who performed at We Day is/was wonderful, I just listed a few :) I STRONGLY encourage ANYONE to go to We Day and be motivated by the people and speakers and performers that attend.

Amanda Todd 1 year anniversary

October 11, 2013 was the 1 year anniversary of Amanda Todd, a 15 year old who went to CABE Secondary School in Port Coquitlam. During lunch at our school, Sullivan Heights Secondary School, multiple students handed out bracelets (picture shown). This day isn't only for Amanda Todd and her story but for the awareness of cyber bullying and it's causes and effects. I know that not everyone is affected by her death but you have to realize is that it's not a day dedicated to her, but a day demonstrating HOW she died and what caused it. I hope this article affected someone in a positive way :)
Thanks!

Tumblr Bought by Yahoo

A little birdy told me that tumblr has been bought by Yahoo!

Early  this morning Yahoo announced it would be acquiring Tumblr for $1.1 billion in cash. They promised "Not to screw up."

In response, the Tumblr community freaked out, they posted many thing like,"Don't destroy fandoms," and “So Yahoo bought Tumblr, which means it’s time to pack my bags and move on."

Many think that what happened to Flickr, will happen to Tumblr. Sign up fees, ads etc.. Though Yahoo has said they won't do such a thing... we still have to see what happens.

Write down below what you think should happen to Tumblr!

The Great Gatsby

One of the most finest books in English literature was recently adapted into a movie, this movie is indeed,      "The Great Gatsby, written by F Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. The narrator of the story is Nick Carraway  a bond salesman who lives in the imaginary town of West Egg. The story is about Jay Gatsby, a millionaire who throws the most lavish parties and his love for Daisy Buchanan. Nick get invited to one of his parties and is asked to reunite Daisy and him together, the story is about; never letting anything change you, despite the circumstances.
The author, F Scott Fitzgerald  (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940). Was an extraordinary writer in the English Literature. He's written; 5 Novels, 10 Short Stories and, 13 Notable Short Stories. His legacy was to take steps in whatever you do, have it be writing, basketball, tennis, or drawing etc. always do what you want to do, fast.

**highly recommend to see the movie**

We are Silent

On Thursday April 18, 2013 I was silent.Through a campaign by Free The Children, founded by Craig Keilburger when he was 13. The purpose of staying silent, not talking for an entire 24 hours was because children all over the world are denied of having their basic needs and their voice to stand up for themselves. When I woke up in the morning I literally had sticky notes everywhere that said," SILENT,"  just in case I forgot. I could not mumble, shout, whisper, or speak. I did this throughout the course of the day, it was hard.  Going to each class and everyone was talking it was so hard I nearly gave up. When I finally started talking I was  surprised because kids at my age and below don't have to right to talk and this could go for 1 month, 1 year, and maybe 10 years and many times their entire life. We use our voices everyday like talking to our friends and family. Our voice is the key to our freedom. Whenever you doubt this, try to stay silent and you will see how much weaker you feel. Our silence is their voice, We are lending our voice to help them speak up. We stand up for bullying, abuse, self-harm, and many other things, why not this? It is the same problem, they live in fear and cannot stand up for themselves. So on Thurday April 18, 2013 I was silent. For more information go to...
